Dysport®

Dysport®
(Anti-wrinkle injections)

Anti-wrinkle injections are performed using Dysport®, which is botulinum neurotoxin (abobotulinumtoxinA) from Ipsen company.

It is an acetylcholine release inhibitor and a neuromuscular blocking agent.

Dysport® and Botox® are both made from botulinum toxin type A. All botulinum toxins have the same mechanism of action: blocking the release of acetylcholine and preventing the muscles from contracting to maintain the aesthetic effect. However, the dose of Dysport is not the same as the dose of any other botulinum toxin product and cannot be compared to the dosage of any other botulinum toxin product that you may have previously used.

It temporarily prevents specific muscle movements that cause frown lines, forehead lines, wrinkles around the eyes (also known as ‘crow’s feet’ lines), axillary hyperhidrosis, etc.

It works by blocking the release of membrane-bound acetylcholine transmitter at the neuromuscular endplate resulting in temporary paralysis of the affected muscle.

The most common side effects are generalised weakness, eyelid drooping, fatigue (tiredness and/or asthenia), ‘flu-like’ symptoms, pain, bruising, swelling, and reddening at injection site.

Less commonly, Dysport® may cause itching.

Rarely, skin rashes, including rashes at the injection site, and muscle weakness maybe experienced.
